Daddy got to sit up in a reclining chair yesterday for about 3 1/2 hours. He was much happier sitting up, it's hurting him laying in that bed. His sugar is staying pretty high so they are still giving him a long and short acting insulin. His B/P has also been elevated so he's on medication for that.

His Doctor came in to see him this morning and is very pleased with Daddy's progress. They are going to take out one of the drains that is in his chest this afternoon, which the Doctor said is a pretty painful procedure. They are also going to make him try and walk today and the Doctor has already told the nurse to let us help with getting him up and walking. Dad seems a little more coherent today. They started him on a morphine drip yesterday that Daddy could administer himself when he needed it, but Daddy wasn't aware enough to understand what he was supposed to be doing. We would watch and when his pulse rate got up in the 80 + range we knew he was hurting so we were able to push the button for him. He's doing much better today and is able to push the button himself.

Daddy will still be in the ICU probable through the weekend and his Doctor said if he continues to do this well he'll be moved to the ICU step down unit Monday.

Daddy's sense of humor is still in full force. The Doctor covered up his trachea tube and asked Dad to say "e" and Daddy took his finger and wrote "E" in the air. Then Mom told him that she was going to come out to the waiting room and he put his finger over his trachea tube himself and said I'm going with you. He's also been able to write on a board to let us know what he needs and if we don't understand what he writes the first time, he then writes it in all caps.

One thing that we are all still a little concerned about is that even though Daddy's not using the pain meds. very much, he is still pretty out of it. He opens his eyes for only a minute or two and then he's right back to sleep. Even when they had him sitting up in the chair yesterday he slept the whole time.

I'll try to update again tonight after we see how he does with the walking etc.

Thank you again for all the prayers and support. I've been reading all the comments to Mom and I know they are very comforting to her, so keep them coming.

it all sounds very good. I can see your dad saying he wants to go out into the waiting room. He looked good when I saw him last night and will try to come by again this weekend. It all sounds very positive! Will keep prayers going. Debbie Elig

Tell your Mom and Dad we are keeping them in our prayers. We send our love to them and are here to do anything we can if we are needed. We'll not try to visit with them until he comes home. He needs rest to recuperate from this major surgery. Thank you for keeping us updated. We are all so concerned. Jesse and Jan Jones
